Tribal Membership

Eligibility Requirements for Tribal Membership

Due to the many e-mails and phone calls requesting information on how to become a member of the tribe, we have decided to post the requirements on our web site.

The Tribal Roll of the Pee Dee Indian Tribe of South Carolina is open for anyone to become a member of the tribe, if they meet the requirements that has been established in our Constitution & Bylaws. We want all people of Pee Dee Indian heritage to become members of the tribe if that is their desire.

First let me make this "STATEMENT", we do not go by any blood percentage to prove you are Indian, and also there is no census records any where that will list your ancestor as a Pee Dee Indian because no one was ever identified as being from a certain Indian Tribe except in a few cases, and none were Pee Dee Indians. We use genealogy to say you are Indian. If your ancestors were born in South Carolina and in the geographical location of the Great Pee Dee River or the Little Pee Dee River, which today are Marion, Dillon, Marlboro, Chesterfield, Darlington and Florence Counties you can assume that they were descendants of the Originial Pee Dee Indians that lived in this area of South Carolina.

You must provide the following items to apply for membership to the tribe.

1.  Certified copy of your birth certificate and copies of your parents birth certificates if they were born after 1930.

2.  Copy of census record that lists your ancestor (s) as Indian, Mulatto or Croatan.

3.  A family genealogy chart from you back to at least one set of Great-GrandParents, you must mark each person of Indian descent in red highlite marker on your chart and include on the chart the date of the census and the race as listed on the census record.

Example ( John Tall Man, 1920Census Dillon Cnty, race Ind. Mu. or Cro. )

4. Application for Tribal Membership with
    Signature Notarized where required.

This will allow the tribal enrollment Officer to verify your genealogy. You must include a readable copy of each census record you make reference to on the family tree chart. Indian ancestors are to be highlited in red or some color to make them easy to find when your application is being reviewed.

Please enclose a current 4 x 6 photo that can be scanned, it will be used for your Tribal ID Card if your application is approved. You must have your signature Notarized by a Notary Public in the State of Residence.

When you have gathered all the necessary documentations and made your Family tree chart you can apply for an application form by e-mailing redfeatherruns@msn.com or by letter to PO Box 557 Attention Enrollment Officer  McColl, South Carolina. Please refer any questions you have to the e-mail address above.

I know there are many of you out there that are descendants of the Pee Dee Indians and have never had the opportunity to claim your heritage, well now is your chance. Do not be held back because you think you are to white, too dark skinned or not looking like one of those movie star Indians. The face of the American Indian has been changing ever since the first ship arrived. I look foward to receiving your application for membership.

 TRIBAL MEMBERSHIP INFORMATION UPDATE

The Pee Dee Indian Tribe of SC is still conducting an Indian survey, which is finding those tribal members that have their names on the old tribal roll, but there is no information file for those names. The program is having good results.  There has been 385 members found and are verified to be Indian. Don't wait for the survey taker to find you, contact the tribal office if you know you are the roll, or think you should be.

There were many tribal members that had a family Genealogy done by the Tribe back in the 90's, when the tribe applied for Federal Recognition and that information was lost, stolen, or something happened to those files and charts. Great News!  We have found some old Family Genealogy charts that had some references to census records, we researched each one of those charts and found 551 names that are verified to be Indian. The only thing you need to do now is complete a tribal information update form and get your new card. We have no way of knowing if you are alive or have moved to a new address. These names are over 10 to 15 years old and your children are now grown up and have children. We are trying hard to get this Tribal Roll updated with the people that want to be on it.  It is my duty as the Chief of this tribe to never believe that the Indians who live in our  communities do not want this tribe to grow and become for the people what it can be. I ask each one out there to attend the meetings and find out what is being done to make things better for all Indians. Please don't listen to the rumors you hear, come find out for yourself. If you want to be a Tribal Council member, or even run for Chief, then do it. Your voice can be heard if you want it to be heard.

Again, I thank those who have stuck by me during the past three years. I will be up for re-election in November of this year and if the people want to re-elect me, I will continue to serve the members of this tribe, however if some one defeats me, then I will pledge my support to that person. This tribe is now in the hands of the tribal members and the tribal council members. I only work with the authority given to me by the Tribal Council. It is no longer a one man show or family controlled. We do allow two family members to be on the council, but that would not continue if there were tribal members to fill the seats. The tribe will hold Elections in November of 2008, 2009, and 2010. The positions up for election will be posted 60 days in advance to allow for people to be nominated for those seats.

Thank you for visiting this site. The site is for tribal members and all that want to know about the Pee Dee Indians of SC
