Updating of Tribal Roll Campaign
The Pee Dee Indian Tribe of South Carolina has closed their Tribal Roll until further
notice. This is necessary due to a review of the current requirements for membership into the tribe, and also to allow time
for those members whose names are on the tribal roll, but have never came forward to update their file or ask that their name
be removed from the roll.
Work has been in progress since March of 2006 to get the tribal rolls straight. As
of this writing there is 500 complete and corrected files of the ones who were on the list for state recognition and those
who have became members since March 2006. There are over 2,848 names on the roll we have, and it goes back to the
70's & 80's.
This is going to be the last attempt and opportunity for those who want to be members
of this tribe. No one wants anyone to be a member of this tribe that does not want to be. There is not going to be any dead
line time to update your records. The ending date will be announced when the tribal council decides that we have allowed
ample time for members to come.
The tribe has tried different methods at gathering this data, but have not had
good results. We are going to try something new. There are three forms that an individual must complete to update and it will
not take more than 30 to 40 minutes at the most. The Tribal Council understands that you may be working and cannot come to
the Office on Wednesday between 9:am to 4:pm, but you can call and make an appointment for a staff person or the Chief to
wait for you after 4:pm. The Council also understands that your time is valuable and it will cost you gas expense to come
to the office. Knowing this to be true, the Council has Authorized the Chief or Staff Person to reimburse each person $ 5.00
that comes in an completes their file update. This is only for the person whose name is on the old roll. Some folks do not
know that their name is on the roll and if they do, some do not have an old card or
know their number.
If you think or know your name is on the roll, but
not for sure, then we check for you. No one will be paid
$ 5.00 unless their name is on the roll and they complete and update. We will even
pay the $ 5.00 if a person completes a removal from roll form.
I would like to inform current active members and those that we are trying to reach,
that there is benefits to be had if you have a tribal card and you are an active member. People may tell you that this
tribe has nothing to offer, but I would like to invite you to visit the Tribal Land located at 134 Longer Sand Lane
locate off Hwy 38 going to Hamlet, NC. There you will see a Trailer House and Three
Acres of land that belongs to the tribe. We also have a tribal Van. The tribe has overcame many obstacles during the past
five years, we have paid off over $ 4,000.00 back taxes, which we were stuck with. People have began to have respect and trust
of the Original Pee Dee Indian Tribe of SC again. The Tribe has Money in Grants for use for Cultural Classes and to
conduct Census surveys to update the roll.
The tribe is in the process of updating the Petition for Federal Recognition Review
again. This work is coming along real good. I would like for everyone to know that this tribal Administration has accomplished
a lot in three years since State Recognition and we could have accomplished more with your help.
The update campaign will begin on Wednesday October 07, 09 at the office on main street
in McColl, SC. Wednesday each week 9 to 4 pm will be the hours of operations. You may call 843-523-6790 to make an appointment
if you cannot make the regular hours.
Thank you,
Chief Caulder & Tribal Council PDITOSC
