The Pee Dee Indian Tribe of South Carolina

THE GREAT PEE DEE RIVER
indiantribalpictures010.jpg

We are a State Recognized Indian Tribe by the State of South Carolina.

The Pee Dee Indians at last are now known as Indians by South Carolina.  It only took 29 years and nine months to receive this recognition.  The Tribe was Chartered November 29, 1976 as an Indian Tribe.  It was a very special occasion for the Tribal Chief to receive the certificate of State Recognition for The Pee Dee Indian Tribe of South Carolina.

The Chief was a signer of the "Palmetto Indian Affairs Commission for South Carolina" back in 1986.  Which gave (or was suppose to give State Recognition to the Tribe) but this time it was for real.  Never to be taken away when the Governor left office, as in the other situation.  We have always been Indians, but now that we have proven we are Indians, we can say we are Real Indians proven by documentation.

We are The Pee Dee Indians.  Our ancestors were some of the Indians that Juan Pardo met in 1560 when he was exploring the interior of what is now the State of South Carolina.  Our ancestors lived along the Great Pee Dee River, which got it's name from our people.

The Pee Dee Indians have fought in every war and conflict from the Revolutionary War to the War in the Middle East.  The Pee Dee Indian has survived through some trying times.  Today we are still struggling to improve our lives and be accepted as the people we are.  We are not receiving any type of Federal or State assistance at this time.  Which leaves the seniors and young families in a bad situation.  Our only means of income is from the generosity of those that make donations to our tribe, which is used to help those members in need of help.
